The good news is that the “kill list” naming African-American students at Laredo Middle School was a hoax. The sad news is, it was written by an African American student who felt excluded and wanted to “fit in.” Once again, the politics of intolerance and exclusion have driven a child to extremes. Thankfully, this time, no one was hurt. But shouldn’t our schools be doing more to address these issues? Metal detectors may prevent actual violence, but they do nothing to stop the rage and sense of abandonment that builds up in kids. Maybe instead of a zero-tolerance policy for metal objects there should be a zero-tolerance policy for intolerance. The University of Colorado is wrestling with another facet of the problem today. There is no better time for teaching kids about equality and inclusion than elementary school. It should be taught at the dinner table, but apparently, that isn’t happening.
