I rode my bike to the top of Mt. Evans for the first time today, which is a big milestone for any cyclist. But it was on the way back down that the most memorable moment occurred.

Mt. Evans stands 14,264 feet, often higher than the clouds, and certainly higher than most plants can survive. On the descent, at just below 12,000 feet, I crossed the timberline and, in an instant, it was as if I had ridden into a wave of fragrance from the evergreens, wildflowers, and many other flora that were suddenly thriving all around.

It was a remarkable moment that I’m guessing you’d need a bike to experience. A hiker wouldn’t cross the treeline quickly enough and more than likely your car’s windows would be rolled up (it’s cold up there).
