Escape the usual trick-or-treat routine or costume-kegger weekend by hitting up some alternative amusement in the spirit of spook. Below, a few choice monster moments for kids and adults alike this Halloween.

FOR THE ATHLETES
Denver Gorilla Run – Run, walk, jog, skateboard, unicycle, or skip to conquer this 5.6K route through Denver. (We highly recommend gorilla-style: on all fours.) There are no rules to this charity run, save one: Everyone wears a full gorilla suit, provided upon entry. Proceeds support the Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund. Bonus: You keep the gorilla garb. The Reinke Brothers Haunted Mansion – Startling special effects and Disney-caliber animatronics make this haunted mansion anything but a joy ride. Frightmare Lot – Back-to-back scares will have you bumping into mine shaft walls, tripping on fences and headed for an escape from this outdoor, open-space ghoul fest. “Howl”oween – Bring your pup to this wine and cheese (and candy) party at the Omni Interlocken and make sure he/she is dressed to impress. The pooch with the best costume wins a weekend at the Omni Interlocken Resort, complete with dinner plus your choice of golf or spa packages. Wags To Whiskers Animal Wellness Fair – Make sure Rufus is as happy and healthy as possible with a low-cost wellness exam and blood profile at this pet extravaganza by the Colorado Humane Society. Trick-or-treat for pet goodies at more than 80 exhibitors, watch the adoption parade for furry-friend potentials, and snag an autograph from a Broncos cheerleader to boot. Cabaret Diosa’s Willy Juanka and the Cha Cha Factory – Colorado’s favorite mambo act makes their last hurrah (exiting the biz after 11 years) a dazzling Halloween show with chainsaw jugglers, 20-foot dancing skeletons, rapping munchkins, and more. Mustache4cash Halloween Bash – For a month, Mustache4cash participants have been collecting pledges by growing mustaches to raise money for the Byrne Foundation, a scholarship/mentor program for at-risk Denver youth. Ghouls, goblins, and ghosts, oh my! Halloween is just around the corner, folks. Here, a sampling of some of Denver’s most freakish and fun Halloween events.

Run for the hills…

Scream Scram — Oct 28
Show off your Halloween costume at this 6th annual 5K walk/run around Washington Park and 100M Spooky Sneak for kids. Benefiting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS), the race raised $10,000 last year. Participants receive a tee shirt, food, candy, and opportunity to win prizes. Fri at 6 p.m. Washington Park. Pre-race fees: $23 (adults), $15 (children and seniors). Race-day fees: $27 (adults), $19 (children and seniors). Pumpkin Dash — Oct 29
Feel less guilty about scarfing that entire bag of mini Snickers by burning some calories at the Pumpkin Dash—a 5K run & kid’s 1K to benefit the Denver Children’s Home and the University of Denver’s Sports, Arts, Volunteerism, and Education (S.A.V.E.) program. Immediately following the race, families are encouraged to attend free Halloween festivities in the Ritchie Center, including swimming, climbing, games, and trick-or-treating. Exotica Erotica Ball: Reve Risque — Oct. 28
Dreams, fairytales (and fantasies?) come alive at the annual Exotica Erotica Ball, where the less clothes you wear, the better. The theme this year: Reve Risqué. Physicians and administrators at Exempla Lutheran Medical Center shave it all off to raise money for a new hospice center.
