Usually when I’m planning to visit a restaurant, bar, or lounge for the first time, I’m kind of excited. But not this time. Tonight I’m meeting a group of other writers, artists, and music types for “Lounge,” a loosely organized salon for a group of creative cocktailing types. The gathering is usually held at one of Denver’s many hipster dive bars or cool watering holes, but tonight we’re meeting at the VFW Post #1 at 10th & Bannock.

Founded in 1899 by veterans of the Spanish American war, it’s the first and oldest of around 2500 VFW posts in the country. But even though its own website says it boasts one of the largest memberships of any post in the country, I’m told that the lounge and hall are up for sale due to lack of use and interest. Apparently the restaurant portion of it closed well over a year ago. I’m not entirely sure what this means to Post #1; if the lounge closes, is that the end of the post entirely?

I’ll be heading down tonight to check it out, so hopefully I’ll learn more. In the meantime, we’re gathering there tonight starting at 8 p.m., and though the bar doesn’t have the largest selection in town, I hear they pour the drinks tall and proud. I just hope they’ll be able to continue the tradition.
