I’m seriously starting to wish for cooler weather. Not that I don’t love the summer months, but I wouldn’t mind a nice, chilly 70-degree day for once. (Wouldn’t it be nice to need a little sweater at night again?) This long, hot summer has just about killed my motivation to get out and enjoy each long, hot day.

Yesterday, I totally wussed out on the Underground Music Showcase organized by some of my writer pals at the Denver Post. It started at 6:30 p.m., and I was simply exhausted from running errands all day in the 102-degree heat, and sadly unwilling to be parted from my air conditioning to go rock out in a crowded club. Which kinda sucks, because many of Denver’s most talented local bands were on the roster — Munly and the Lee Lewis Harlots, Born in the Flood, Photo Atlas, Mr. Pacman, George & Caplin, The Omens, and more — all playing at five different locations along South Broadway.

So yes, I’ll admit it. I lamed out on supporting local music in favor of savoring cold air, which is officially a really bad excuse. Today, another group of friends will be heading over to City Park for the free City Park Jazz series. It sounds like a lot less work — and therefore a lot less of a heat-inducing energy drain — since it involves little more than sitting on the grass and listening to jazz bands; this evening, Laura Newman and AOA will take over the bandstand near the lake to throw out some serious jazz riffs.
