90 YEARS OF CHOICES
Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains commemorates its 90th anniversary this year with a gala to raise money for their Teens for Tomorrow programs. The programs educate young people about making positive life choices and preventing unintended pregnancies. Fill up on hors d’oeuvres (and yep, even birthday cake) at this cocktail reception and hear keynote speaker Cecile Richards, the national president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Photographs of the women’s rights movement during the last 90 years will be up for grabs in a silent auction. Tue 5:30–8 p.m. Seawell Grand Ballroom, Denver Center for the Performing Arts, 1101 13th St. Tickets $50 (young professionals)–$500 (sponsor level). For more information or tickets, call 303-813-7704 or visit www.pprm.org.

MUSIC: GIVE PEACE A CHANCE
The timing of Snatam Kaur’s visit to the Denver area couldn’t be better. Kaur’s Grammy-nominated sounds echo the principles of peace-building that 10 Nobel Peace Prize winners—the largest gathering of Nobel Peace Prize winners ever in the United States—upheld during Peace Jam in Denver last weekend. The Colorado-born sacred-chant artist stops in Denver and Boulder as part of her own Celebrate Peace World Tour, bringing a spiritual performance that blends musical elements of the East and the West. SHOP: ART STUDIOS CLEAN HOUSE
Rain, rain, go away, we all want a shopping day—especially the folks at Tennyson Gallery, who saw a turnout thwarted by dreary weather at the First Friday Artwalk a couple weeks ago. Luckily, the artists weren’t discouraged (and even luckier, they still want to reduce their summer-season inventory), so they’re inviting us back for the “Buy My Art Before I’m Dead” sale at the Living Artists Open Air Market this Saturday. In fact, all the Tennyson Cultural District shop and gallery owners are hoping good weather blows in for a Fall Harvest Celebration that day, so get there early while the sidewalk sales are humming. Sat 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Sidewalk/east parking lot/side yard of Tennyson Gallery, 4369 Stuart St. For more information, call 303-433-3274 or visit www.tennysongallery.com.

FILM: WATCH IT, LOVE IT, HATE IT; BUT CAN YOU DO IT?
Bring your popcorn and a critical eye to Aspen, Carbondale, or Glenwood Springs for the 28th Aspen Filmfest. The resort valley will host advance previews of new films and award-winning documentaries from six continents, and present Harrison Ford with the “Independent by Nature Award.” Highlight: Catch the winner of the Sundance Film Festival’s Grand Jury and Audience awards, God Grew Tired of Us, chronicling the journey, struggles, and culture shock of three Sudanese refugees who find themselves in America amid new customs, strange traditions, and personal challenges (Wheeler Opera House, Aspen; Crystal Theatre, Carbondale). Nov. 26–Oct. 1, times and venues vary. Tickets $9–$20. For more information, call 970-925-6882 or visit www.aspenfilm.org.

As for other rules—required objects to appear in your film, script limitations, etc.—you’ll get details at the start of the competition. Local industry pros will judge your creations. Oct. 20–22. Shootout: Fri 9 p.m.–Sat 9 p.m. Registration: Fri 6–9 p.m., in front of the Courthouse on the Pearl Street Mall, Boulder. Awards screening: Sun 6 p.m. The Boulder Theater, 2032 14th St., Boulder. GAME DAY: MAKE A GOOD CALL
You can have your cake and eat it too with an ingenious Boulder tailgate-shuttle system on game days. Did we say cake? We meant beer. West End Tavern and the infamous Banjo Billy Bus are pooling their respective services to give Buff fans a way to pre-party and get to the game safely. Park for free in the Pearl Street parking garages, grab a beverage and some eats at the Tavern, and hang on to your game-day receipt for a free ride to and from Folsom Field. Bonus: The two 42-inch plasma TVs on the West End’s rooftop make for some sweet pre- and post-game revelry. Home games. West End Tavern, 926 Pearl St., Boulder. For more information, call 303-444-3535.

TELEVISION: DO-IT-YOURSELF…AND FOR YOUR FANS
Well, they could be your fans if you were to star as the next host of a DIY Network home improvement series, airing in 2007. This, of course, would require you to hit up the open casting call—part of the national “Stud Finder” search—coming to Denver this Saturday. If you’re handy around the house, you save thousands doing your own renovations, and your smile can charm the pants off a studio audience, you just might have what it takes. Denver’s best handy man or woman wins a trip to New York to compete with other finalists in a live final round, filmed on a national morning show in October. How good do you look in a tool belt? (Note: Only the first 100 people to show up can audition, so hustle.) Sat 8 a.m.–3 p.m. Ace Hardware, Alameda Station, Broadway Marketplace Center, 417 S. Broadway. For more information, call 865-560-4280 or visit www.DIYnetwork.com.
