Colorado’s Supermax prison in Florence was built to be the most secure in the country. It houses terrorists, bombers and violent criminals. In the wake of government reports in the past few weeks that Supermax is not up to snuff for security, Colorado Senators Ken Salazar and Wayne Allard asked to see the facility.

Earlier this month, an arbitrator concluded that staffing levels fell short of reducing correctional officers’ inherent job hazards to their lowest levels. The Office of the Inspector General also released a report that found the Bureau of Prisons has not effectively monitored the mail of terrorist inmates.

Salazar was there Saturday and Allard will visit today. Maybe if the federal prisons didn’t have to house non-violent offenders, there would be adequate money to staff the facilities housing the worst of the worst. Where do you want your prison dollars going?
