In a joint announcement at the City and County Building today, Mayor John Hickenlooper and The Anti-Defamation League announced the launch of a new program available to Colorado schools. It’s called “No Place for Hate,” and as the name implies, it’s intended to combat intolerance and bias among students. The programs consists of five steps and schools that complete them will be designated “no place for hate communities.” Example: students will sign a “Resolution of Respect” declaration hat provides in part, “”I firmly believe that one person can make a difference and that no person can be an innocent bystander when it comes to opposing hate.” The program also offers training programs in topics such as face to face and cyber bullying. The overall goal, said the Mayor, is “to promote respect for individuals and “promote recognition and celebration of their differences, to challenge prejudice and bigotry.” I’m glad to see the city, schools and ADA team up to provide students with these critical tools. It’s unfortunate that so many kids don’t learn these lessons at home. Maybe they will bring their new skills home and, as Crosby, Stills and Nash might have sung, “Teach your parents well.”
