Salmonella poisoning can involve more than an upset stomach.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems.

As to the causes:

Salmonella can be transmitted to humans when fecal material from animals or humans contaminates food.

Better safe than sorry. One case in Colorado has already been reported.
