Last week, New York Times writer Jennifer Steinhauer forecasted the rise of the paper plate lunch, a traditional Hawaiian meal that usually includes white rice and mayo-loaded macaroni salad. Steinhauer credits president-elect Barack Obama, who publicly craved the combo, with bringing national–and possibly international–recognition to the carb-heavy lunch.

Locally, check out 8 Island Hawaiian BBQ in Boulder for chef-owner Michael Iuchi’s take on the meal. Your best bet: The fried-to-perfection chicken katsu with island dipping sauce, macaroni, and a green salad.
