Advocates of same-gender marriage are launching another national day of protest today. Only this time, instead of hitting the streets with signs and banners, gay and lesbian activists will simply “call in gay,” refusing to work in order to show the nation their importance to the economy, according to Reuters.

Day Without a Gay” asks participants to volunteer in their communities instead. The idea was sparked by Sean Hetherington, a West Hollywood comedian and personal trainer who was inspired by the recent daylong protest against California’s Proposition 8, which prohibits gay marriage.

Not everyone will be boycotting work, however. The Rocky Mountain News notes that local newspaper Out Front Colorado, which covers the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered communities, will clock in.

O neighbors in Utah will have to be careful about how they participate today. There, companies can fire employees simply for being gay, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.
