Unemployment in Denver has hit 5.9 percent, according to the most recent federal labor data cited by the Denver Business Journal. That’s slightly higher than the average for other Colorado cities and up from 4 percent one year earlier.

As the unemployed hunt for jobs in this tight economy, there are “even more opportunities for them to be victimized” by promises of employment that fail to deliver, according to The Denver Post. Scams range from work-at-home opportunities to job recruiters that don’t actually have access to jobs: “All sound convincing; all promise success.”

One decent place to look for jobs seems to be in the realm of small businesses. The average employee paycheck for those at small businesses in Colorado rose 14.7 percent, according to the Northern Colorado Business Report, although the job market remains sluggish.
