In the wake of President Barack Obama’s ordered closure of the prison that houses suspected terrorists in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, there’s now speculation that the prisoners will come to Supermax in Florence, just west of Pueblo, within a year. That’s according to the Rocky Mountain News, which reports that Governor Bill Ritter’s office believes three other states are more likely to end up with the 245 inmates. Supermax already holds 9/11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui; Ramzi Yousef, who was behind the 1993 World Trade Center attack; and attempted shoe bomber Richard Reid. Ritter would not oppose Gitmo detainees coming to Colorado. Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius, on the other hand, doesn’t want the inmates at Fort Leavenworth in her state, according to 9News. Not so fast says Fifth District Congressman Doug Lamborn, a Republican, and state Representative Buffie McFadyen (pictured), a Democrat of Pueblo West. Both oppose bringing the inmates to Colorado. Meanwhile, it’s a good idea to close Gitmo, say experts interviewed by Agence France Presse. The closure could “deprive militants of a major propaganda tool and help Pakistan in the fight against extremism.”
