The bad economy is even affecting recruitment for university sports programs, and the private Colorado College in Colorado Springs, where hockey reigns supreme, is no exception. While some of the most prominent programs have resisted making cuts in their searches for the nation’s best athletes, small programs like the one at CC have been forced to rethink recruitment, according to The New York Times.

The private college of about 1,900 students has one of the country’s top men’s hockey teams, but to stay within budget, it had to scale back recruiting in “talent-rich” regions like the Northeast and Canada.
