The Colorado Legislature: Army Proud in Tough Times

By |

As part of today’s Military Appreciation Day, about a third of Colorado’s lawmakers will journey to Fort Carson Army post, some arriving via military helicopter, the Colorado Springs Gazette reports. The lawmakers will tour an urban-warfare training area and the post’s Family Readiness Center, meeting also with Maj. Gen. Mark Graham and, don’t forget, the troops. About 200 Fourth Infantry Division soldiers just returned from overseas, according to NewsChannel 13. Unfortunately, some soldiers are struggling after serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. Suicides among troops rose by 11 percent last year, the Army announced yesterday (via Reuters ), and Army Secretary Pete Geren “cannot tell you” why the number is going up.” Officials have said that troops are under tremendous stress because of repeated and long tours of duty because of simultaneous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan,” the Rocky Mountain News writes.
