Aspen Resident Jennifer Figge First Woman to Swim Across the Atlantic

By |

Jennifer Figge, an Aspen woman who has been swimming for nearly a month, reached a beach in Trinidad to become the first woman on record to cross the Atlantic, according to The Associated Press. Perhaps more impressive is that she did it at the age of 56.

Figge, escorted by a sailboat, began her swim on January 12 at western Africa’s Cape Verde Islands, battling 30-foot waves, strong winds, and whale, dolphin, and sea turtle traffic (no shark sightings). A friend she keeps in touch with via satellite phone says Figge was headed to the Bahamas but was forced to take a 1,000-mile detour to Trinidad because of inclement weather.

Figge’s next stop is the British Virgin Islands, in late February. Then it’s back to Aspen, where she trained for months in an outdoor pool during snowstorms.
