Dressed in faded blue jeans, brown shoes, a plaid shirt, and a sports jacket, Michael Bennet, Colorado’s newest senator, visited with about 100 people at a senior center in Greeley on Saturday morning, speaking about a range of topics, including immigration and the economy, write the Greeley Tribune and Fort Collins Now, which highlighted his weekend tour of northern Colorado.

The former Denver Public Schools chief, who studied at Yale Law School and worked in investment banking, says he plans to spend more time in Colorado than in Washington, D.C. Bennet also talked about the need to settle arguments over water. He’ll have a chance to be influential on that front given one of his committee assignments–Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry–as the Journal-Advocate in Sterling notes.

Bennet will also serve on the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs as well as the Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs. Regarding immigration, Bennet says, “The demagoguing on this issue isn’t getting us anywhere.”

Meanwhile, Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck tells The New York Times that he plans to continue the controversial hunt for fraudulent Social Security numbers, which has so far led to hundreds of deportations.
