Though Vitamin Cottage Natural Grocers issued a voluntary recall of its fresh-ground peanut butter earlier this month, six of its customers nonetheless became ill after eating salmonella-laden, fresh-ground peanut butter. Those cases, emanating from the Lakewood-based natural foods store, now bring Colorado’s tally in the nation’s tainted peanut crisis to 16, according to the Rocky Mountain News.

At least 600 people in 43 states have become ill so far in the massive recall scandal. Nine people have died. Colorado’s victims are aged 2 to 60; one person was hospitalized.

The Peanut Corporation of America, the company linked to the problems and accused of purposely shirking health standards, has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, a process that allows the company to liquidate its assets to pay off creditors, according to The Associated Press.

Senior editor Amanda Faisonreports for 5280 that Boulder-based Justin’s Nut Butter has seen record sales as a result of the recall.
