RALPH LAUREN FW09 NEW YORK 02-20-09The last show of the New York fall 2009 season, Ralph Lauren definitely delivered a finale. Denver women will appreciate Lauren’s collection for its wearable daytime suiting and separates (jackets, vests, knitwear, pants), as well as his captivating eveningwear, showing that even in a recession you can still offer women plenty of wardrobe options.

The Gist of It: In a season when so many designers have gone the tough, chic route, Ralph Lauren introduces his collection with a quick run of black eveningwear, then embraced the all-American glamor his clients have come to depend upon.

All of his signature elements are present: classically tailored English tweed jackets and coats, three-piece suiting, cable-knit cardigans and Fair Isle pullovers, romantic chiffon and satin blouses, and jodhpurs in wool gabardine and velvet. And it’s all rendered in a tasteful, sophisticated palette of silver-gray, brown, mauve, pale pink, white, and antique ivory and gold.

Outerwear options are outstanding and include a double-face wool coat, an embroidered shearling with toggle closures and fur trim, and several fur chubbies. For evening, Lauren shows off some beautiful cocktail dresses and gowns, but his mix of feminine with the more masculine look best: a paisley-print gown with a patchwork coat or suede jodhpurs paired with a cutaway velvet top.

And don’t forget the scarves. A key accessory for Lauren’s collection, they come either shot through with metallic thread and tied like an ascot or wrapped around the neck with layers of ruffles peaking out.
