When the Professional Bowlers Association tour hits Wheat Ridge for a four-day, $180,000 battle this week, each bowler will use the same sized purple ball, an exact replica of a 1980s-era ball you might find in your garage, according to The Denver Post.

The Geico Plastic Ball Championship will, for one golden moment, ban balls operated by remote controls or self-righting, global-positioning equipment. Okay, bowling balls aren’t really that technologically advanced. Still, pros today generally tour with dozens of balls equipped with complex weight systems inside or reactive resin exteriors that maximize control.

Some of the bowlers will relish the return to the good old days, when bowling was bowling, a time when their comrades on the golf course started played with woods made of real wood.
