The Associated Press sent Panorama readers and a lot of other people swimming in the wrong direction yesterday after reporting that 56-year-old Aspen resident Jennifer Figge was the first woman to stroke across the Atlantic Ocean. What we weren’t told was that when she hopped back into a boat to take a break, the boat kept heading toward her destination. The Rocky Mountain Newswrites that in order to accomplish her feat, Figge would have had to swim much faster than a “pre-bong” Michael Phelps–about 112 miles a day. Most of the articles imply that she set a record, the Rocky notes, although it seems Figge didn’t mean to mislead anyone.
