While it was the promise of a perfect burger that first drew me to Merle‘s in Old Town Littleton, it’s the fried pickle chips that bring me back.

Sure, the two burgers I tried–a build-your-own and a veggie topped with shredded cucumber, avocado, and dill cream–were fine, but the ho-hum flavors weren’t much competition for my staples at the Cherry Cricket, CityGrille, or Larkburger.

The pickle chips, on the other hand, were spectacular–crispy and crunchy in a tempura-like batter that tasted of cornmeal and black pepper. I alternated between dunking the goods in ranch dressing and popping them plain. Paired with a cold beer, this app has the makings of an ideal happy hour–especially on a spring day when Merle’s garage doors are flung open and the rooftop patio is happening.

Warning: When the basket of pickles arrives piled high with pipin’ hot slices, use restraint, lest burn your fingers.
