I am an unlikely fan of baseball. With zero sports background and a severe peanut allergy, I could see the ballpark as a confusing trap of people yelling rules I don’t understand and shelling peanuts that are tiny death stars of salty doom. But I don’t feel that way at all. I love the sunburns, the push of the crowds, and the confusing mid-game antics like Rockies workers hauling arse across the field and the crowd yelling to spur them on. I am the tourist who, instead of a fanny pack, wields overpriced plastic cups of Coors. I love that baseball’s athletes are middle-age men with bellies who are sometimes forced to sprint from base to base. That said, I don’t have a ticket to Opening Day. The $40 price quoted to me sounds like it would be better used for a week of groceries. (Don’t worry, I’ll be in the Rockpile soon.) But there are some sunny spring days when I crave the crazy crowds and people-watching. This, coupled with the fact that the Rockies are playing during prime happy-hour time in the afternoon, led me to dig up the following downtown happy hours that let you save money, watch the game, and feel part of the great buzz of energy we all feel on Opening Day: Falling Rock, 1919 Blake St. The food: Always cheap, you can get a sandwich for around $6. And ask for the spicy fries. The beer: Oh, happy days. With nearly 70 beers to choose from, try the latest and greatest offerings from local craft breweries. Breckenridge Brewery & Pub, 2220 Blake St. The happy hour: 3-6 p.m. Includes $3 drafts, wells, and wine. The beer: I’m dying to try Pandora’s Bock, a traditional bock with a Denver-style boost of hops. Blake Street Tavern, 2401 Blake St. The happy hour: 3-7 p.m. Includes $3 wells, wines, and beers and $5 appetizers. Bonus Rockies specials: Before the game, get a burger and a Coors Light for $8.50. After the game get $3 Coors, $4 Blue Moon, and $5 24-oz. Keystone Light cans.
