Unemployment might be high, but that isn’t stopping Denver-area grocery store workers from preparing to strike. But they emphasize that they’re trying to avoid one, according to the Denver Business Journal, which reports that the workers at Safeway’s regional distribution center voted to strike on or after May 9, when a five-year contract for United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local No. 7 expires. Kris Staaf, director of public affairs for Safeway’s Denver-area division says Safeway hopes to avoid a strike, adding “nobody wins.” Still, Safeway and King Soopers, which could also be affected by a strike, began advertising for hundreds of new jobs to replace employees if a contract agreement isn’t reached, according to News13 in Colorado Springs and The Denver Post, which points out that the UFCW is the state’s largest union, with about 23,000 members.
