It seemed grocery workers were headed for strike, but over the weekend Safeway and King Soopers extended their contracts with grocery workers, which was set to expire on Saturday, until May 30, providing a few more weeks for both sides to talk about potential wage freezes, increased retirement age, and pension and health care issues, according to The Denver Post.

A spokeswoman for the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 says the union “believes it is in everyone’s best interests to keep negotiating and fighting for a fair deal for workers.” The grocery stores had agreed that if workers at one chain went on strike, the other could lock out its employees.

Contract negotiations at Albertsons, meanwhile, are ongoing, The Associated Press reports. And late last week, Governor Bill Ritter urged all the parties involved to “to redouble their efforts to reach an agreement on their labor contracts,” writes the Denver Business Journal.
