The newspaper business is tough in Fort Collins, where yesterday Fort Collins Now reported that the downturn in the industry has “swallowed yet another newspaper: The one you are currently reading.” Now, which began as the Fort Collins Weekly in 2003 and was sold to Swift Communications Inc. in 2007, will shut down on Thursday.

Greg Campbell, who helped found the paper and served as editor until last year, had hoped Swift, which also owns the Greeley Tribune, could save the paper, writes the Fort Collins Coloradoan, but, he said, “it seems like the opportunity with Swift sort of delayed the inevitable.”

In 2008, the city’s alternative newsweekly, the Rocky Mountain Chronicle, also closed. As for the Coloradoan, it shuttered its printing presses recently to save money. The paper is part of a growing number printed at The Denver Post’s plant, reports the Denver Business Journal. Loveland’s Reporter-Herald isn’t likely to join those ranks anytime soon. The paper recently began printing on its new high-speed press, according to an article from today’s edition.
