A day after Colorado Avalanche coach Tony Granato was canned, the team promoted its minor league coach to pilot the Avs back to relevance. Former National Hockey League player and current coach of the American Hockey League’s Lake Erie Monsters, Joe Sacco signed a three-year contract to coach the Avs yesterday, reports The Denver Post. It’ll be interesting to see how Sacco handles his first NHL head-coaching job, as his win/loss record was 60-160 with the Monsters over the last two years, failing to make any playoffs. The Associated Press notes that Sacco “inherits an Avalanche squad that missed the playoffs for the second time in three seasons as it stumbled to a last-place finish in the Western Conference.” The team is also without a goalie: Peter Budaj and Andrew Raycroft are both unsigned for next season. “I can’t worry about that right now,” Sacco says. “That will all take care of itself.”
