Staying up until 12:30 this morning to watch the Colorado Rockies take on the L.A. Dodgers would have been worth it if the Rockies would have won the game. But they came up just short, falling 4-2 to the Dodgers in the bottom of the 13th inning, when Andre Ethier cracked a walk-off two-run home run. The Rockies are capable of a lot of things, but beating the Dodgers apparently isn’t one of them, writes The Denver Post.

The team’s only offense came on a fifth-inning two-run home run by left fielder Ryan Spilborghs, and that was pretty much it; they left enough guys on base throughout the game to start another team. The Los Angeles Times credits the Rockies for reducing a 15.5 game deficit to the Dodgers to 7.5, but adds that “it’s kind of amazing to make up that kind of ground and still be this far behind.”

The Rockies have a chance to prove they deserve to be considered a contender with a series win against the Dodgers, but all they proved last night was that it’s not going to be easy. Westword pointed out yesterday that even if the Rockies are competitive but lose the three-game series, their 20-3 record over the last few weeks still doesn’t put them at an elite level.
