Each time I’ve zipped past Cloud 9 Frozen Custard on Eighth Avenue, I’ve made a mental note to check the place out. Finally, after two years of living within a half-mile of the shop, I walked over, bought myself a malt, and devoured every last delicious drop.
Frozen custard is what ice cream wishes it could be–thick, rich, and endlessly creamy–thanks to less air and the addition of egg yolks. As is custom, Cloud 9 serves only vanilla and chocolate, and while purists are happy with au natural, the rest of us will decorate our scoops with the cookie, candy, or fruit toppings. They also happily whip up thick-as-concrete polar eclipses (a.k.a. blizzards), mix dreamy shakes, and drizzle hot fudge on towering sundaes.
Cloud 9 certainly isn’t the only place in town serving frozen custard (there’s the Daily Scoop just across Colorado Boulevard, Fergies off Quebec, and CJ’s in Lone Tree), but they just might be the friendliest.
The spot, which has been dishing its custard for more than five years, has a loyal following. The evening I visited, there was a revolving door of sweet-minded patrons. And now Cloud 9 can add one more to those ranks.
