Tourists are still traveling to Montezuma County, in Colorado’s Four Corners region, says Lynn Dyer, tourism director of Mesa Verde Country. She tells the Durango Herald, “None of us were expecting it to be a blockbuster, banner year, but things seem to be doing well.” Yet travelers, she says, are looking hard for values, particularly when it comes to paying for accommodations, and are even willing to forgo a room by bringing a tent. That seems to be hurting the hotel and motel biz. For the state as a whole, the occupancy rate in May was 52.4 percent, with an average room rate of $103.97, according to the Northern Colorado Business Report. Meanwhile, the Denver Business Journal reports that bookings in the state’s mountain destinations are down 15 percent, a pattern similar to the one seen in ski areas last winter.
