After secluding herself for nine years, Julie Stene, empowered by a court ruling that called for an investigation into whether charges should be filed against the men accused of sexually assaulting her, has come out of the shadows to tell her side of the story. “I’m sick of hiding,” she tells The Denver Post (video below). Stene is convinced that she was assaulted after passing out at a high school graduation party and waking up the next morning in pain. In an unusual ruling, District Judge Carlos Samour Jr. recently found that Arapahoe County District Attorney Carol Chambers was wrong to drop an investigation and ordered a special prosecutor to look into filing sexual-assault charges against Clyde Surrell and Riley McMurdo. A football player for the University of Colorado from 2000 to 2003, Surrell was later involved in the university’s recruiting scandal involving alcohol and sex. In all, nine accusations of sexual assault surfaced at that time, but no charges were filed. 9News notes that Surrell was tied to two of those accusations. Surrell could not be reached for comment, and McMurdo declined comment.
