Already convicted in the slayings of Javad Marshall-Fields and his fiancée, Vivan Wolf, as early as this morning Robert Ray may learn whether he will become Colorado’s third death-row inmate. Sir Mario Owens has already been sentenced to death for his role in the killings, but co-conspirator Ray, his attorneys told jurors Wednesday, should be spared lethal injection because he grew up in violent projects on the south side of Chicago, reports Fox 31. Ray, who was not present during the killing, told the jury to grant him a life sentence, expressing sympathy for the mothers of the two victims. “I take full responsibility for the part I had in this crime,” he said during the proceeding (via 9News). But the prosecution said Ray worried Marshall-Fields would send him to prison in another murder case and plotted the 2005 murder. Prosecutor Ann Tomsic also showed graphic autopsy photos of both victims to jurors, imploring them, “Don’t waste your mercy on Robert Ray.” The death penalty in Colorado is complex and not often carried out, as the case of Nathan Dunlap illustrates in 5280’s “The Politics of Killing.” Dunlap has behind bars for more than 15 years, since the Chuck E. Cheese massacre in Aurora.
