sotomayor-soniaNo doubt the confirmation of Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court yesterday was a milestone for Latinos everywhere, particularly Puerto Ricans, both on the island and the mainland (via The New York Times and El Vocero). The excitement reached fever pitch here in Colorado, however, when the newly minted justice made a very special call to a group gathered in LoDo last night to celebrate the occasion, writes The Denver Post. “Polly, you know how much I love you, and how much I love your senators, who both voted for me,” Sotomayor told former state Senator Polly Baca, who had the distinction of attending Sotomayor’s hearings and will also attend her White House reception. Because of the women’s close ties, Denver was the only gathering to receive a personal call, but The Pueblo Chieftain points out that the response from southern Colorado’s Latinos has been no less passionate. Indeed, the region commemorated its own historical Latina-judge moment last Saturday, when Christine Arguello, Colorado’s first Hispanic U.S. district court judge, keynoted a scholarship awards banquet for the Pueblo Hispanic Education Foundation (via the Chieftain). Back in May, Obama staffers reportedly asked Arguello if she would be willing to undergo the scrutiny of being vetted for the Supreme Court seat won by Sotomayor (also via the Chieftain).
