Former Rocky Mountain News baseball writer Tracy Ringolsby made the argument on Fox Sports yesterday that the National League West, the division the Rockies call home, is baseball’s best-kept secret, with three teams that are legitimate playoff contenders.

Many writers and national television programs ignore the NL West, but they do so at their own peril, considering that the Los Angeles Dodgers, the National League’s best team, is from this division, along with the Rockies and the San Francisco Giants, who share the third-best record in the National League.

The NL West’s lesser teams—the Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres—are atrocious, but the Dodgers, the Rockies, and the Giants are a combined 111-78 against teams outside their division. Fox Sports’ power rankings has the Rockies ranked eighth, one spot behind the Giants. We’re better than the Giants, and they’ve lost one more game than the Rockies, but hey, who’s counting?
