beatlesAs souped-up versions of the Beatles’ entire catalog were released yesterday, a Colorado Springs music shop smartly emulated one of the band’s best publicity stunts. No, it didn’t perpetuate rumors that Paul McCartney died or that the song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” is really about LSD.

Independent Records allowed local tribute band Rubber Soul to gather on its rooftop, as the Beatles did in an impromptu live gig in the “Let It Be” era. Sure, many bands have copied the stunt, including U2, but the show was a nice distraction yesterday, winning attention from the Colorado Springs Gazette.

“While My Guitar Gently Weeps” flowed from rooftop speakers as singer/guitarist Chuck Snow, a well-known local rocker (and friend of mine), told the paper that other than his fear of heights, he thoroughly enjoyed himself. Some big fans milled about below, including Desiree Doose, from Pueblo, who watched with her kids, Julian, 7, who is named for John Lennon’s son, Julian Lennon, and, Lynda, 3, who is named after Paul McCartney’s deceased wife, Linda McCartney.

Meanwhile, The New York Times highlights reviews of the Beatles’ releases, as well as a new video game.
