Betting on the Broncos

By |

Dumervil, ElvisIf you had the Denver Broncos starting the season 6-0, well, quit lying. You didn’t. Nobody did, including the San Diego Chargers, who picked fights with the Broncos as they took the field last night (recap via Pro Football Talk). But here we are, with the Broncos undefeated after unplugging the Chargers in San Diego 34-23.

Key to the win were the two touchdowns scored by wide receiver Eddie Royal, who returned both a kickoff and a punt for scores, the first player in Broncos history to accomplish such a feat, according to The Associated Press.

Equally important was the continued success of the Broncos defense in the second half of games this season, whooping the Chargers 17-3 after halftime (via The Denver Post). The Broncos have allowed just 10 points in the second half all year, and 5-foot-11 Elvis Dumervil (pictured) leads the league with 10 sacks.

The only potential negative—besides having to listen to Charger fans whine all week—is that Pro Bowl safety Brian Dawkins tweaked a hamstring early in the game. He sat out most of the first half and returned to play the second half, but walked with a noticeable limp after the game. For today, at least, let’s be happy as we check the standings at NFL.com and see that the Broncos are three-and-a-half games up in the AFC West.
