October is now officially the deadliest month ever for U.S. troops in Afghanistan, according to The Washington Post, where the war on terror has raged for eight years. Fort Carson in Colorado Springs has been particularly hard hit by the bloodshed this month, starting with the firefight that left eight soldiers dead on October 3. Yesterday, the Pentagon announced two more of the post’s soldiers were killed: Private First Class Devin J. Michel, 19, of Stockton, Illinois, who died in a bombing in Zhari province; and Sergeant Eduviges G. Wolf, 24, of Hawthorne, California, who died in Kunar province after her vehicle was attacked with a rocket-propelled grenade (via the Colorado Springs Gazette). So far, 17 soldiers have died this month—five more than in any month since 2001, when the most recent war in Afghanistan began. In all, 287 soldiers from Fort Carson have lost their lives during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Meanwhile, Colorado-based SKYDEX Technologies Incorporated claims it has developed a blast-impact product that could better help protect soldiers inside Humvees, according to 7News.
