Though stollen—a traditional German bread made with dried fruits, nuts, and spices—is customarily served at Christmas, I think Thanksgiving morning makes an equally good occasion. A cup of coffee and a slice of City Bakery’s mildly sweet, chewy version is just the thing to get the day—and all that cooking—started.

And when you pop by Michael Bortz’s two-year-old bakery, don’t forget to pick up a loaf of crusty bread, doughy buns, and, if it’s available, the dense pecan-pumpkin coffee cake.

Tip: Call ahead to make sure what you’re looking for is available.
