Attorney General John Suthers has reached a settlement with the Colorado Humane Society in Englewood, which last month was accused of putting down animals after telling donors the shelter was “no-kill.” According to the settlement, operators Robert Warren and Mary C. Warren are prevented from running a charity for 10 years and an animal shelter for five years (via the Denver Business Journal). Stephanie L. Gardner, who helped run the shelter, is barred from running a charity or a shelter for two years and one year, respectively. In December 2008, Westword singled out the people in charge of the shelter for “Schmuck of the Week” recognition, and the alt-weekly has been following the story since it cropped up: “Among the allegations: that the shelter spent nearly half of the $66,000 it raised in donations to help animals affected by Hurricane Katrina on the payroll; that the shelter euthanized older dogs to make room for puppies, even though it advertised a policy of not killing animals; and that the society falsely reported the number of animals adopted.” This press release from Suthers’ office will take you to the various legal documents associated with the case.
