Despite playing terribly for most of last night’s game, the Colorado Avalanche did just enough to pull out a dramatic win against the Atlanta Thrashers at the Pepsi Center, making history in the process.

The Avs went into the third period down 2-1 to a decent Thrashers team. A third Atlanta goal seemed to inspire the Avs, though, as Mile High Hockey points out. Chris Stewart notched his 19th goal of the year to cut the score to 3-2, and then Chris Durno scored a dramatic goal as he dove to the ice to tie the game. The win came quickly in overtime, thanks to Kyle Cumiskey.

“Nine seconds. That’s all it took…nine lousy seconds,” notes the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s hockey fan blog.

Cumiskey’s goal was the quickest overtime goal in franchise history, and with that one shot, the Avs are now back in sole possession of first place in the Northwest Division, with 74 points (via NHL.com). The Avalanche have two games left before the Olympic break, with the Phoenix Coyotes coming to town Friday night before the Avs travel to Los Angeles to face the Kings on Saturday.

Unfortunately, poor attendance is plaguing the Avs, with an average 13,592 people per home game, according to ESPN, putting them at 27th out of 30 NHL teams. Last night was a perfect example of the poor fan showing, as just 11,644 witnessed what turned into one hell of a game, a figure Mile High Hockey calls “tragically sparse.”
