Last week, Dick Armey, the former speaker of the U.S. House, began an assault on fellow Republican Tom Tancredo, the former Colorado congressman who ran an unsuccessful presidential campaign in 2008 on the single issue of illegal immigration. Armey, a Tea Partier and FreedomWorks chairman, told talk show host Charlie Rose (video below) he was “not really happy to see Tom Tancredo calling himself a Tea Party guy” (via AlterNet). Armey’s assault on The Tanc continued yesterday at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., where he said, satirically of Latino voters, “Now that we’ve identified the fastest-growing voting group in America, let’s go out and alienate them” (via USA Today). He added, “When I was the majority leader, I saw to it that Tom Tancredo did not get on the stage because I saw how destructive he was” (via The Daily Caller). “This is a nation of immigrants;” “if you love America, love freedom,” and work and pay taxes, you should be welcome in the country.
