Diggs Brown, the former Fort Collins city councilman, former Green Beret, and Republican who offered an apology of sorts after wrongly asserting that U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi diverted a U.S. military jet for her personal use, has dropped out of the race to unseat Democratic Congresswoman Betsy Markey.

Brown did not do well in Tuesday’s Republican caucuses for the Fourth Congressional District and is now endorsing the man who won two of the district’s largest counties: state Representative Cory Gardner of Yuma.

“There is one clear goal: defeat Betsy Markey in November,” Brown says in a statement (via 7News). “Betsy Markey has been wrong on Cap and Trade, wrong on card-check, and wrong on the stimulus.”

In 2008, Markey was the first Democrat elected to the district in three decades.

No word yet from the others in the Republican primary race: Tom Lucero, a member of the University of Colorado Board of Regents, and Dean Madere, a Loveland businessman.
