Of the inmates held inside the privately owned Hudson Correctional Facility, 877 are from Alaska, and about eight of them took over a section of the prison yesterday after the cell doors in a segregation unit inexplicably opened. The Associated Press reports that the inmates refused to leave a common area, sparking an incident that damaged sprinklers and set off a fire alarm at the Cornell Companies Incorporated facility, 25 miles northeast of Denver International Airport. Speaking for the Houston-based company, Charles Seigel tells 7News no guards were injured and no hostages were taken in the outburst at the unit, which houses dozens of inmates with disciplinary issues, as well as some in protective custody, notes The Denver Post. Eventually, an emergency response team quelled the situation, using tear gas to subdue inmates. Many of them now face criminal charges.
