The death threats this week at Boulder schools have been scary. One, in a boys’ bathroom stall at Boulder High School, warned that the “KKK is back. All blacks will die Friday, 4-16-10.” Another, on a lunch table at Boulder County’s Arapahoe Campus read, “I’m killen all Mexicans! On Friday” (via Westword). Now, a 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the second incident and charged with ethnic intimidation, a class one misdemeanor (via 9News). If charged as an adult, the boy could face up to 18 months in jail and a $5,000 fine. The incidents have led student leaders to rally their peers to embrace diversity in a first-ever “unity week” celebration that starts Friday, writes Boulder’s Daily Camera. Boulder High assistant principal Shannon Minch is all for the idea. “We’re going to be stronger for it,” she says. Next week could be tough for the school, as well, as members of the Kansas-based, anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church plan to protest there Thursday. A “counter-protest” Facebook page has been created in opposition to the notorious church’s visit to the area.
