Yes, Colorado Rockies closer Huston Street has had a rough spring training. Last time we checked in, Street had undergone an MRI, which came back negative, so it was believed he’d return shortly after opening day. But now, outlets are reporting that Street has been completely “shut down.”

The Denver Post’s Troy Renck sounded the alarm yesterday afternoon on his Twitter feed, saying, “Huston Street is no longer playing catch. Will keep you posted. But that’s not good news.”

Street says the time of his return is indefinite, Renck later wrote.

“I don’t have a timeline, whether it’s late April, early May, or mid May. The key is getting it stronger so when I come back there are no problems.”

Street had planned on simply throwing through the stiffness, but team doctors are telling him to take it easy.

Purple Row thinks the problem is much more serious than it appears on the surface.

“I’m extremely concerned about Huston Street,” writes one of the site’s bloggers. “Not in the ‘Oh, it’s gonna be a rough April without him’ sense; I’m talking about the ‘We might need a new closer for the season’ sense.”

The team has already discussed putting Franklin Morales in as the temporary closer. He was OK for short periods in that role last year, but he’s the type of guy who gets rattled and can implode on the mound over the course of a couple batters.

Is it really time the Rockies start planning to play 2010 without Street?
