Four mechanical engineering seniors from Colorado State University have patented a device—a backpack incubator—that could save the lives of babies born outside hospitals or of infants during emergency travel, according to the Northern Colorado Business Report. They are among the bumper crop of college students graduating this year and entering the still-shaky economy.

There’s a 70 percent increase in the number of Community College of Aurora students graduating, according to EdNewsColorado (via INDenverTimes). Metropolitan State College of Denver’s grad rate is up 27 percent, and there are many more large groups of students graduating from Colorado colleges and universities.

They may be leaving just in time. Students in coming years could pay much more for their tuition if Governor Bill Ritter signs legislation on his desk that would give colleges in the state more flexibility in setting tuition rates. Such a law is needed, according to backers, because lawmakers are facing $300 million in budget cuts next year as federal stimulus money used to bolster school budgets is set to expire, according to The Associated Press.
