We haven’t hit June yet, but consensus is already building around the baseball world that Colorado Rockies ace Ubaldo Jimenez is the most impressive pitcher this season. After Wednesday night’s 7-3 win—the Rockies’ season-high fourth in a row—over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Coors Field, Jimenez has a 9-1 record with a mind-boggling 0.88 ERA, the best in baseball according to The Associated Press. Jimenez would be a perfect 10-0 were it not for a fluky 2-0 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 9, when the Rockies’ offense sputtered and Jimenez allowed one run after he misplayed a soft infield hit. MLB.com calls Jimenez the most dominant pitcher in the game, and quotes him as saying he’s figuring out how to mix his pitches and work against a particular team on any given day. Jimenez’s next start comes on Monday in San Francisco against two-time Cy Young award winner Tim Lincecum and the Giants, pitting two of the game’s best pitchers against each other. Rockies manager Jim Tracy also calls Jimenez “the best pitcher in the game,” and says he would have let Jimenez finish Wednesday night’s game, but gave him the rest before he matches up with Lincecum. The Rockies had a 7-0 lead on the D-Backs by then, thanks to back-to-back home runs by outfielders Seth Smith and Carlos Gonzales. Smith also homered earlier in the game, and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
