For months I’ve been waiting for Maggie & Molly’s, a bakery on East Sixth Avenue, to open. It’s not just that I think it’s good for the neighborhood or appreciate that the shop sits next to the Truffle Cheese Shop. It’s that me and my sweet tooth live mere blocks away.

When I anxiously stopped in last week, I bought several cupcakes and warm-from-the-oven chocolate-chip cookies. The cookies were out of this world (and I say this as someone who always chooses molasses or oatmeal-raisin over chocolate chip). They were gooey yet crispy and not cloying—finally, a bakery that uses salt to counter sweet.

The cupcakes were also very good, especially the white and yellow cake varieties. The crumb was moist and dense, and the frosting on top was true, rich buttercream. The two-week-old shop already does enough trade to sell out of cupcake flavors. Call ahead to find out what’s available—and given the chance, don’t miss the summery strawberry.
