Aurora City Councilwoman Molly Markert and the city’s decency brigade are surely celebrating this week. After a campaign calling for a boycott of Perky Cups, including warnings that the cafe’s bikini-clad baristas were at risk for rape and murder because of the way they dress, the cafe has closed its doors.

But it wasn’t the boycott that shuttered the establishment; it was nonpayment of rent. Owner Jason Bernal was evicted after failing to pay rent and obey terms of his lease, including posting signs that were not allowed, the president of Coldwell Banker Commercial tells The Aurora Sentinel.

Bernal says he’s glad the store at 12101 E. Iliff Ave. has closed, complaining of problems with the landlord and property manager, including issues with the shop’s heating system, which he alleges were not fixed in a timely fashion.

“The management knew what our company was, and then when they started receiving complaints, [they] changed their tune,” says Bernal, adding that he plans to open a new location near South Chambers Road and East Hampden Avenue in the coming weeks.
