Colorado Rockies ace Ubaldo Jimenez has erased any doubt over who is baseball’s best pitcher with his complete-game 4-0 shutout of the division rival San Francisco Giants yesterday on the road. “I’m beginning to run out of words to describe not only the excellence, but the dominance, in which this guy is pitching up to this point,” Rockies manager Jim Tracy tells reporters (via MLB.com). Jimenez leads the majors in wins (10) and ERA (0.78). And as The Denver Post points out, we’re barely into June, and Jimenez is one win shy of tying the franchise record for wins before the All-Star break. Sports Illustrated gives Jimenez an honorable mention in its early-season MVP awards watch, and even the San Francisco Chronicle praises the 26-year-old Dominican after he shut down the home team. “Is Jimenez putting together an epic season that could rank among the most dominant in generations?” the Chronicle asks. The Rockies are still in fourth place in the five-team National League West division after beating the Giants, but the team sits just one half-game behind San Francisco and two games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, who took two of three games from Colorado over the weekend at Coors Field (via MLB.com). The division-leading San Diego Padres are four games up on the Rockies, and continue to be one of the biggest surprises of the 2010 season.
